Closing a document is different from exiting a program. After closing a document, the program is still running.

To Close a Document. Click the Office button
Click the Office button
then click Close
then click Close
If you have made changes, a dialog box opens, asking if you want to save changes. 
          Click Yes to save any changes, or click No to ignore your changes.
